             fruity flat lay

ALTHOUGH YOU MAY NOT ALWAYS HAVE
all the equipment you need when undertaking
new projects, you’ll be surprised at what
results you can achieve with a little ingenuity.
Bill Atchison didn’t let a lack of lightbox
prevent him realising his vision of capturing
a striking fruit-based flat lay composition.
“Although it may not be my preferred
method of taking photos, I do enjoy getting
            creative with photography indoors. Unlike
working outside, you generally have complete
control over your image and have time to make
even the slightest of adjustments in the quest
            for the perfect shot.
“I placed my fruit slices on top of a sheet
of 20x16in glass from an old photo frame.
This was then propped up between two stools
allowing me to position a flashgun equipped
            with softbox underneath pointing upwards.
A second flashgun was positioned above
the subject to add more definition to the fruit.
“Using my camera’s Live View, I took
            multiple test shots to establish a balance Canon 90D | 60mm | 1/200sec | f/22 | ISO 100
            between background brightness and correctly
exposed subjects. With a few saturation
adjustments in Lightroom to bring out the
vibrant colours, and some Content Aware edits
to eradicate slight imperfections, I was happy
            with the results I achieved.”
