1 EXAMPLE ONE
CLOSED-TOP POUCHES
This type of pouch is by far the oldest type of magazine pouch on the market. They have a simple
pocket to house one or two magazines, with a simple profile that's has been brought right up
to date with the materials used and the incorporated by some real world manufactures, but
arguably the most secure magazine pouch on the market.
Magazines are kept securely in place by the use of a Hook and Loop backed flap or buckle. The
access is the slowest of all three options, but you can speed up loading times. To do this, fold
back the flap into the pouch, this will also provide more than enough grip to hold your magazine
in place. Some flap closure pouches have removable and adjustable flaps for this reason.
You can buy either single, double or triple pouches in this configuration; again it's down to how
you play and what capacity magazines you carry.
■ Available in single, double or triple configurations in a variety of solid or camouflage patterns.
2 EXAMPLE TWO
OPEN-TOP MAGAZINE POUCHES
Normally an extremely low profile pouch made from an elastic material that grips the magazine in
place. These pouches areprobably the way most players lose their mags though, but still, they are
a very popular choice throughout the community. This type of pouch works well with an internal
kangaroo pouch and allows low-cap players to store more magazines without adding bulk.
When you have 'spent' you magazine and dumped it, the elasticated pouches lie flat, adding
very little bulk or snag hazard. There's also no need for bungee retention or kydex inserts to
retain your magazines, drawing a magazine from an open-top pouch is both smooth and easy.
The one thing you will notice is that this type of pouch will start to fade in colour after a while
as the elasticated material starts to wear, this is pretty normal, but the retention will last the life
of the pouch. In fact, the material will wear thin before the pouch fails.
■ Available in single, double or triple configurations in a variety of solid or camouflage patterns.
3 EXAMPLE THREE
BUNGEE RETENTION MAGAZINE POUCHE
An alternative to open top magazine pouches that use a Bungee cord retention strap to hold the
magazine firmly in place. This type of pouch is a popular solution for securing your magazines
and can be seen on internal kangaroo pouches on a whole heap of plate carriers. These pouches
are pretty quick to access; however, if you're not careful and have prepared your pouch for
extracting a magazine, you can easily snag the withdrawal on the bungee cord. The easiest
way to overcome any snagging is to move the cord to one side, but this result in there being
no retention, meaning that you could very well lose a magazine or two. They can also be a
hassle when re-arming as again the bungee cord can quickly get in the way when replacing your
magazines. There is also an option for you to tie in the triple mag pouches directly into your plate
carrier as long as the Panel has two Vertical clips.
■ Available in single, double or triple configurations in a variety of solid or camouflage patterns.
4 EXAMPLE FOUR
POLYMER MAGAZINE POUCHES
Also known as as "Fast Mags" (which is a brand name created by ITW). A Polymer mag pouch is
a different, and perhaps superior, method of carrying your magazine onto a skirmish field that
arguably offers the best retention on the market. The retention is really good, so good that you
will see real world shooters hanging their mag pouches upside down. This has been reported to
be a more natural and faster way of drawing your magazine in a high pressure environment.
All Polymer mag pouches have an elastic tension band in some or form. Most require a little
adjustment to securely fit and retain your magazine, others like the ITW version featured here
have a simple band that provides tension between the front and back pieces to form a universal
grip around the magazine. Because Polymer mag pouches are ultra-light and also low profile, you
will not notice hardly any difference in weight over a more conventional laminate magazine pouch.
■ Available as single units in a variety of solid colours.
