Tactical lights may have optional filters to produce coloured light, usually red, to preserve night
vision or may emit only infrared light for use with night vision equipment.
Believe it or not, the first tactical torches illuminated targets way back in 1900, but the early
bulbs were often too fragile to survive a firearm recoil. A United States patent was issued in 1912
for a night sight for firearms demonstrated on a revolver with a bulb mounted in a shock absorber
below the barrel and the grip modified to hold a battery and include a pressure switch.
Weapon-mounted lights offer hands-free use, leaving the operator free to use both hands to
control the weapon. Most models have an on/off switch mounted to a short wire or pleasure
switch built into the light housing. Although the vast majority of modern pistol lights have integral
switches, you can still get some examples of older lights that use external pleasure switches.
